Guardian: A Study Desk and Public Locker for Libraries

An Innovative Solution for Securing Belongings

When studying in a library, a student or researcher may need to leave their desk at times to search for a book, use the bathroom, go to a cafe, or make a phone call. However, leaving personal belongings unattended even for a short period puts them at risk of theft.

Introducing Guardian, a study desk designed by Chien-Ming Hsieh specifically for libraries. Guardian features a rotating and lockable screen cum cover, providing a unique solution to the problem of securing belongings in public spaces.

Guardian's design incorporates a magnetic security lock and a hydraulic hinge, ensuring that personal items are safely stored when the user momentarily steps outside the library. The desk's dimensions are 1040 mm in width, 790 mm in depth, and 1130 mm in height, making it suitable for various library environments.

Functioning both as a study desk and a public locker, Guardian's rotatable barrel screen serves two purposes. In its vertical orientation, it creates a private space for the reader and divides each desk from its neighbor, enhancing privacy and focus. When swung down into its horizontal orientation, the screen covers the entire tabletop, securely storing the user's belongings beneath it.

The Guardian project started in April 2012 and was completed in August 2012 in Taiwan. It was recognized as the Red Dot Design Concept winner in 2012 and was exhibited at the 2013 Taipei International Invention Show and Technomart in September 2013.

Chien-Ming Hsieh's design research focused on addressing the need for a study desk with storage functions for desktop items, allowing readers to confidently leave their seats temporarily. Guardian is not only suitable for library and study areas but also for open office desks, conference tables, and work tables. The estimated price for Guardian is $800 USD.

The design of Guardian presented several challenges, including creating a smooth arc form for the screen cum cover, integrating a lamp and platform combination, and incorporating a locking device. However, these challenges were overcome, resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing study desk and public locker.

Guardian's rotating screen cum cover is patented (M448944, D154342) by Chien-Ming Hsieh from Da-Yeh University, with the patent issued on March 21, 2013, in Taiwan.

This innovative design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. The award acknowledges Guardian's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, Guardian exemplifies strong technical and creative skills, making it a valuable addition to libraries and public spaces.
